Rule Out The Body First

Before you treat the behavior, treat the dog. Some medical problems make stool smell like a fresh meal. With a malabsorption disorder, the gut can't pull nutrients from food, so they pass straight through.

Diet and Digestion

Food can matter when stool contains undigested nutrients because of a medical problem such as malabsorption or pancreatic insufficiency. But ordinary coprophagia is not reliably explained by "low-quality filler food," and switching brands is not a guaranteed fix. Start with cleanup, prevention, training, and a vet check if the behavior is sudden or paired with weight loss, diarrhea, or unusual hunger.
