Common Toxic Patterns

Inconsistency is the most damaging pattern. Allowing the dog on the couch sometimes, then yelling about it other times, creates chronic confusion. The dog never knows which rules are real.

Humanizing your dog is another trap. Dogs are not furry children. They do not experience guilt, spite, or revenge. When you come home to a destroyed pillow and your dog looks "guilty," that expression is appeasement behavior triggered by your angry body language, not remorse about the pillow.
