Charging the Marker
Before a marker can pinpoint behaviors, the dog has to learn that the sound means food. Charge it first: say "yes" and immediately deliver a treat, twenty times in a row. Soon the sound itself predicts the reward.
Once the marker is charged, timing is everything. Mark the instant the desired behavior happens, not before and not after. If you are teaching sit, mark the moment the rear touches the ground.
