LESSON 5 · The Trust Bond

The Power of Routine

A fearful dog's brain is always scanning for the next threat. That scanning is exhausting, and it keeps fear switched on. Your job is to make the dog's world boring in the best way. Feed at the same times.

Sudden motion is what most scares a damaged dog. So announce everything before you do it. Before you reach toward the dog, show your open hand first. Before you clip the leash, let the dog see the clip. Before you touch, say a consistent cue like "touch" so contact never arrives by surprise.
