Why Punishment Backfires

Punishing a counter surfer usually makes things worse. The dog rarely connects your anger to the theft — instead it learns to raid when you are out of the room, becoming sneakier rather than honest. Worse, fear of you can poison the whole kitchen. This is the key split: you manage the environment so theft can't happen, and you train a better choice for when it could. Punishment does neither.
