Timing Is Everything

The turn-away only teaches if the reward lands fast. Your dog can't read your mind — it can only link "good thing" to whatever it was doing the moment before.

So reward the instant four paws hit the ground, not three seconds later. Wait too long and you may accidentally praise the next jump, the sniff, or the spin. The window is about one second. Hit it, and the dog draws a clean line: paws down means good things happen. Miss it, and you've taught nothing.
