For social dogs that jump, use the auto-sit protocol: the dog must sit before the stranger can approach. If they break the sit, the stranger steps back.

For fearful dogs, create distance first. Stand far enough from foot traffic that your dog notices people but does not react. Feed treats when a person walks by. Over sessions, decrease the distance. Let your dog choose to approach strangers who stand still and ignore the dog.
