LESSON 6 · Master the Basics
Proofing on Real Walks
Outdoors, you cannot script the temptations — chicken bones, dead birds, other dogs' mess. So you rehearse with ones you can.
Drop a planted treat on the path, walk your dog toward it, and cue "leave it" a couple of steps early. Keep the leash short enough that they physically cannot reach it. When they glance up at you instead, pay generously.
Carry high-value treats on every walk just for these moments. Checking in with you should always beat the find on the ground.
