Earning the Greeting

The dog earns the greeting by meeting simple criteria first: four paws on the floor, a loose body, and eye contact with you. Only then do you release them with "say hi."

These criteria give the dog something concrete to do instead of jumping or pulling. You stay in control of the interaction, and the dog still gets to enjoy meeting people. Hold the standard every time — if the criteria slip, the greeting waits.
