A far larger share
The part of the brain that processes smell is proportionally much bigger in dogs than in people. Asking a dog to march in a straight line and ignore every scent is asking them to mute their strongest sense, which is exactly why letting them sniff sometimes makes the focused walking easier the rest of the time.
