LESSON 4 · Tricks That Impress

Two Skills, One Loop

Take it tells your dog to pick up or accept an object. Give tells them to release it into your hand. Run together, they form a clean exchange: you offer, the dog holds, you ask, the dog hands it back.

Teach the pair together from day one. Dogs that learn to take but never learn to give willingly start guarding what they hold. The fix is to make the whole exchange pay: taking earns a reward, and so does handing it back. The dog never loses anything by cooperating, so cooperating becomes the easy choice.
