Deep Learning: Layers of Abstraction

Deep learning simply means neural networks with many layers. Early networks had two or three layers; modern ones can have hundreds.

This hierarchical abstraction is what makes deep learning powerful. The network builds its own feature hierarchy without human guidance. In 2012, a Google Brain project let a network watch unlabeled YouTube videos for days, and it taught itself to recognize cats, with no one ever telling it what a cat was.
