LESSON 4 · Protect Yourself Online

Privacy Beyond VPNs

A VPN is just one layer in a comprehensive privacy strategy. Understanding the full picture helps you make smarter security decisions without overspending on tools you do not need.

Encrypted DNS hides your DNS lookups from your local network and ISP, which is one reason people reach for a VPN. But it is not the same as a VPN: your ISP may still see destination IP addresses and, on sites that do not use encrypted client hello, TLS handshake metadata. Switching to Cloudflare or Quad9 DNS is free and takes two minutes, but it also shifts DNS trust to that provider.

HTTPS already encrypts your traffic to most sites, with or without a VPN. The strongest approach combines tools: encrypted DNS, a privacy-focused browser, and a VPN only when you need it.
