LESSON 5 · Protect Yourself Online

Your Browser Is a Target

Every website you visit can run code on your computer through your browser. Most of this code is harmless — it powers interactive features, loads images, and renders pages.

Your browser is also a massive data collection surface. By default, it exposes device and browser details such as screen resolution, time zone, browser version, graphics behavior, and fonts; your IP address can also suggest an approximate location. Precise geolocation, however, requires a permission prompt. These signals can combine into a unique fingerprint that identifies you across the web. Safe browsing means both security and privacy.
