The environmental cost of internet infrastructure drives innovation in sustainable computing. Liquid cooling systems replace energy-hungry air conditioning and can sharply reduce the energy a facility spends on cooling.

Location matters too. Iceland and other Nordic countries attract data centers because cold climates provide natural cooling and abundant renewable energy. Microsoft even experimented with underwater data centers, using ocean water to keep servers cool.
