LESSON 3 · Who's Watching You? Digital Privacy

Privacy as a Human Right

The debate over digital privacy is fundamentally about power. When companies and governments know everything about you, they can predict and influence your behavior in ways you may never detect.

GDPR in Europe established privacy as a fundamental right, giving individuals power to request data, demand deletion, and refuse tracking. Companies violating these rules face fines up to four percent of global revenue.

California's CCPA provides similar protections, and other states are following. These laws are imperfect but represent a crucial shift — placing the burden on companies rather than individuals. Supporting strong privacy legislation is arguably the most impactful action any individual can take for systemic change.
