LESSON 5 · Tomorrow's Tech Today

Space Debris and Sustainability

The rapid expansion of satellite launches is creating an environmental crisis in orbit. Over 30,000 tracked objects larger than ten centimeters circle Earth, along with millions of smaller fragments traveling at 28,000 kilometers per hour. At those speeds, even a paint fleck can damage a spacecraft.

In a worst case, cascading collisions could make entire orbital regions unusable for generations. Solutions are emerging: ESA plans debris-removal missions, and SpaceX designs satellites to deorbit automatically. International guidelines require deorbiting within 25 years, but enforcement remains weak.
