LESSON 2 · Take Back Your Attention
The hardest part of any digital detox is the beginning. Your brain has adapted to constant stimulation, and removing it can create withdrawal-like discomfort — restlessness, irritability, and the urge to check your phone.
University of Maryland researchers found that students who went 24 hours without media described feelings similar to substance withdrawal. For longer detox attempts, discomfort is often strongest early, then fades.
The fix is environment design, not willpower. Put your phone in another room during meals, turn off non-essential notifications, and replace the scroll habit with a physical one — a book, a walk, a conversation.
