LESSON 2 · Take Back Your Attention

Boredom Is a Feature

One surprising discovery during a digital detox is that boredom is not a problem to solve — it is a mental state your brain needs. Some research links mind-wandering and the default mode network with self-reflection, future planning, and creative thought, but it is not a creativity switch.

When you fill every idle moment with your phone, you deprive your brain of this processing time. Ideas that seem to come from nowhere often emerge during unfocused stretches.

Many writers and scientists deliberately make room for boredom through walks and quiet moments. Constant stimulation may leave us more informed but less creative — trading depth of thought for breadth of consumption.
