The Friction Paradox
Friction is the force that resists sliding between surfaces, and civilization depends on it completely. Without friction, you could not walk, cars could not brake, and you could not grip a glass. Even screws would unthread and fall apart.

A skidding tire switches from static friction to kinetic friction, which provides less grip. Anti-lock brakes exist because of this difference: ABS pumps the brakes rapidly to keep tires in the static zone, where stopping power is strongest.
