Magnets Have No Monopoles

Every magnet has a north and south pole. Cut a magnet in half and you get two smaller magnets, each with its own north and south. You can never isolate a single pole — magnetic monopoles have never been found.

Earth itself is a giant magnet. Its magnetic field extends thousands of kilometers into space, deflecting solar wind that would otherwise strip away our atmosphere. Compass needles align with this field. Birds, sea turtles, and some bacteria use it to navigate.
