LESSON 4 · Light, Sound & the Invisible Spectrum

The Metal Rule

The MRI's magnetic field is powerful enough to turn loose metal objects into lethal projectiles. An oxygen tank left in the scan room can fly across the space at fatal speed — this has actually happened.

Modern implants are increasingly MRI-compatible, made from titanium and other non-ferromagnetic metals. But the screening process remains rigorous because the consequences of getting it wrong range from severe burns to internal tissue damage.
