To brand AC as deadly
When New York adopted electrocution, Edison's allies lobbied for AC to power the chair. The first execution, in 1890, used a Westinghouse AC generator despite Westinghouse fighting to prevent it. The grim PR ploy backfired — AC still won the grid.
