Why Atoms Bond at All
Most atoms are restless on their own. Their outer electron shell isn't full, and a half-empty shell is unstable.

A handful of elements already have what everyone else wants. Noble gases — helium, neon, argon and their cousins — are born with full outer shells. They have nothing to gain, so they almost never react. That's why neon glows quietly in a sign instead of catching fire.
