From Gas to Galaxies

After recombination, the universe was a nearly uniform sea of hydrogen and helium gas. But not perfectly uniform.

Gravity amplified these small differences over hundreds of millions of years. Denser regions pulled in more gas, grew denser still, and eventually collapsed into the first stars about 200 million years after the Big Bang. Those stars forged heavier elements in their cores.
