The Information Paradox

Black holes create a terrifying puzzle. If everything that falls in is destroyed at the singularity, what happens to its information — the quantum states that described it? Quantum mechanics says information can never be truly destroyed. But general relativity says nothing escapes a black hole. These two pillars of physics directly contradict each other.
