LESSON 1 · The Physics Inside Your Gadgets

The Hidden Cannon

Your microwave has a magnetron — a vacuum tube from WWII radar tech, repurposed to cook leftovers. It converts electricity into microwave radiation at a very specific frequency: 2.45 GHz, meaning the electromagnetic field flips about 2.45 billion times per second.

That frequency was not chosen because it is perfect for heating water. It was available and did not interfere with communication signals. A happy accident that changed kitchens forever. The magnetron fires these waves into the cooking chamber, where they bounce off metal walls and penetrate your food.
