LESSON 2 · The Physics Inside Your Gadgets

Circulation Theory

Flight is not one slogan - it is a coupled fluid-flow problem. Newton explains the momentum change of air deflected downward. Bernoulli describes the pressure differences that appear in the faster and slower parts of the flow. Circulation theory ties the same process together mathematically.

The wing's camber helps at low angles. The angle of attack handles heavy lifting at takeoff. Flaps adjust geometry for different phases. Engines provide thrust to drive the plane forward, and the resulting airflow over the wing produces lift. Remove any piece and the system fails. The miracle is not that flight works - it is that so many competing physics principles cooperate so reliably that you can nap at 900 km/h.
