Two Forces, Every Structure
Every bridge and building battles two forces. Compression pushes material together — a column being squished under weight. Tension pulls material apart — a rope being stretched.
Stone and concrete handle compression brilliantly but crack under tension. Steel excels at tension but can buckle if too thin. This is why reinforced concrete dominates construction: concrete resists compression while steel rebar handles tension. Together, they cover each other's weakness. Nearly every modern high-rise, bridge deck, and parking garage relies on this simple but powerful partnership.
