When a truck crosses a bridge, the deck does not bear all the weight at one point. Well-designed bridges spread the load through their structural members. Trusses — triangle frameworks — distribute force along rigid geometric paths. Suspension cables transfer load to the towers, which channel it down into the foundations.
Modern bridges use finite element analysis, computer simulations that divide the structure into millions of tiny pieces and calculate the stress on each one. Engineers can predict exactly where failure would begin and reinforce those points. That precision lets them build in safety margins, so a bridge comfortably carries far more than its everyday traffic.
