Drag and the Spiral

A football's pointed shape minimizes aerodynamic drag. Thrown nose-first in a tight spiral, the ball presents its smallest cross-section to the air. A wobbling ball exposes its full profile, dramatically increasing wind resistance.

The spiral also stabilizes the ball against crosswinds. A spinning football cuts through side gusts because its angular momentum resists being knocked off axis. A wobbly pass catches wind like a sail and veers unpredictably. This is why quarterbacks in windy stadiums focus even more on spin rate — it is their defense against conditions that would ruin a lazy throw.
