Nike's Vaporfly embedded a curved carbon-fiber plate in thick, energy-returning foam. The foam returns roughly 87 percent of impact energy versus 65 percent for traditional shoes.

How the carbon plate does its work: it stiffens the forefoot so less energy is lost bending your toes at toe-off, and it acts like a lever that smooths the roll from landing to push-off.
