LESSON 2 · The Microbe Within

Psychobiotics Are Coming

Scientists call these strains psychobiotics: bacteria being studied for measurable effects on mood, stress, and brain function. Some Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains have lowered cortisol or anxiety scores in small controlled trials.

That is promising, not a replacement for psychiatric care. The effects vary by strain, person, and study design, so the honest claim is narrower: some microbes can influence mental-health pathways, and researchers are still learning which ones matter.

Depression correlates with reduced microbial diversity. People with clinical depression consistently show depleted populations of Faecalibacterium and Coprococcus, two bacterial genera that produce anti-inflammatory compounds. Restoring them is an active area of psychiatric research.
