LESSON 1 · Secrets Your Body Keeps

Pain Is a Prediction

Pain is not a direct readout of tissue damage. It is your brain's prediction about how dangerous a situation is. Soldiers with devastating battlefield wounds sometimes report zero pain, while a paper cut during a stressful workday can feel agonizing. Context shapes the experience more than injury severity does.

Your nervous system sends raw nociceptive signals to the brain, but the brain decides whether to generate the experience of pain. Context, emotion, expectation, and past experience all modify the final output. Pain is constructed, not transmitted.
