The Cell That Cheats

The telomere countdown sounds inescapable, yet some cells dodge it. Their trick is an enzyme called telomerase that rebuilds telomeres after they shorten, resetting the clock.

Most adult cells keep telomerase switched off, which is good news: cancer cells switch it back ON to divide forever. That makes telomerase both a tumor's survival hack and a tempting target for new treatments.
