Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats
The clunky name describes what scientists first saw under the microscope: short, repeating DNA chunks spaced evenly apart, with bits of captured virus tucked between them. Nobody knew what they were for until later — the repeats were the bacterium's filing system for its stored viral mug shots.
