LESSON 5 · The DNA Blueprint

Designer Baby Problem

Fixing a single broken gene is already hard. Enhancing complex traits is harder still. Height, muscle, intelligence, and many disease risks are shaped by many genes plus development and environment.

That does not make enhancement impossible forever, but it makes it far less like changing one setting. The ethical problem arrives before the science is clean: who decides which traits are worth editing?

Recap: Editing Life

CRISPR made gene editing cheaper, faster, and more precise by turning bacterial defense machinery into a programmable DNA tool. It has already reached medicine for some serious genetic diseases.

The next frontier is not whether editing can change DNA. It is whether complex enhancement can ever be made reliable, fair, and ethically defensible.
