LESSON 2 · Nature's Superpowers
Archaeopteryx and Beyond
Archaeopteryx, found in German limestone in 1861, was long called the first bird. It wore feathered wings — but also kept dinosaur teeth, clawed fingers, and a long bony tail. It is a creature caught halfway. Since then, fossil hunters have dug up dozens of other feathered dinosaurs just as bird-like, so the old line between 'bird' and 'dinosaur' has quietly dissolved. There was never one magic moment when a dinosaur became a bird.

Look closely at any bird and the dinosaur shows through. Their feet are wrapped in scales, not feathers. They lay hard-shelled eggs, just as their ancestors did. A few, like the cassowary, still carry sharp claws on their wings. Watch a pigeon strut across a sidewalk and you are watching a small dinosaur move — same hip swing, same head bob, just shrunk down and feathered over.
