Two Ways to Win

Courtship splits into two strategies, and most species lean on one:

  • Display — show off a costly ornament or performance, like the peacock's tail or the lyrebird's song, and let the female pick.
  • Contest — fight rival males directly, so the strongest gains access regardless of looks.

Female preference shapes the first; raw competition shapes the second. Often both run at once in the same animal.
