Learning Without Brains

Plants coordinate growth responses using calcium signaling networks that work somewhat like animal neural pathways. When a root tip meets an obstacle underground, calcium waves spread through connected root cells, redirecting growth within minutes to find a new path through the soil.

The Trap That Waits

The Venus flytrap does not snap shut at the first touch. It waits for two trigger-hair touches within 20 seconds before closing. That short delay filters out false alarms — a single raindrop or speck of dust is not enough to spring the trap on nothing.
