Arms That Taste

Each octopus arm is covered in suckers that taste whatever they touch. An arm can feel inside a dark crevice, recognize a crab by flavor, and grab it — all without the central brain telling it what is in there.

The arm does not wait for orders. It senses, judges, and acts on its own. Even an arm that has been cut off keeps reaching and gripping for a while, because the machinery that makes those decisions sits inside the arm itself, not back in the head.

Picture trying to steer eight boneless arms that can bend anywhere, at any point. No spine, no joints, no fixed shape. Tracking every twist of every arm from one control center would be hopeless.

So the octopus does not try. The brain sets the goal — open that shell, squeeze through that gap — and lets each arm work out the moves itself. Less like a puppeteer pulling strings, more like a coach calling a play and trusting the players to run it. For us that feels backward, since we expect one brain calling every shot.
