It follows the smell
A young dodder seedling has no leaves and cannot photosynthesize, so it must reach a host fast. It detects airborne chemicals given off by nearby plants and grows directly toward the scent, then sinks feeding pegs into the victim's stem. In effect, the vine sniffs out its prey.
