Paleontologists have found ancient shelled animals riddled with tube-shaped tenants that stole their food, and fossil worms preserved inside their hosts. Parasitism is not a late add-on to life. It appears alongside some of the earliest complex animals, which is why it has had time to reinvent itself so many times.
