Neanderthals were not failed humans. They were another kind of human: strong, skilled, social, symbolic, and adapted to Ice Age Europe.
Their disappearance probably had several causes, including small populations, climate stress, interbreeding, disease, and competition with Homo sapiens. Smaller social networks may have mattered, but they were not the whole story by themselves.
