Tar from birch bark
To fix sharp stone points onto wooden handles, Neanderthals cooked **birch bark** into a sticky black **tar**. Getting tar out of bark means heating it hot enough yet with too little air for it to burn, then catching the goo. That is a planned, multi-step recipe, not a lucky accident.
