LESSON 1 · Your Brain Explained

The Chemical Symphony

Your mental state is shaped by neurotransmitter cocktails. Dopamine is involved in motivation. Serotonin helps regulate mood. Norepinephrine is tied to alertness. GABA calms activity. These chemicals interact in complex ways, and no single one maps neatly onto a single feeling — how they shape whether you feel focused, anxious, content, or low is still only partly understood.

Most psychiatric medications adjust these chemicals. SSRIs increase serotonin. Stimulants boost dopamine. Benzodiazepines enhance GABA. These drugs can relieve symptoms, but exactly how they do so is still not fully understood — and a drug changing a chemical does not prove the condition was caused by too little or too much of it. Understanding neurochemistry is one powerful tool for treating mental health, even though there is no simple chemical test for these conditions.
