Hydrogen is the simplest atom in existence — one proton, one electron, nothing else. It makes up 75% of all normal matter in the universe.

Despite being the most abundant element in the cosmos, pure hydrogen is rare on Earth because it is so light that our gravity cannot hold it. Most of Earth's hydrogen is locked in water molecules. Hydrogen gas is now a leading candidate for clean fuel — burning it produces only water.
