Einstein's relativity
Near the nucleus, gold's electrons reach about 58% the speed of light. These relativistic effects contract gold's outer (6s) orbital, shrinking the gap between energy levels so gold absorbs blue light and reflects yellow. Without relativity, gold would look silver.
