Smoke detectors — they use americium-241 to sense smoke particles
A tiny pellet of americium inside each detector emits alpha particles that ionize the air. Smoke disrupts this ion current, triggering the alarm. The amount is so small (about 1 microcurie) that it is harmless — but disposing of millions of detectors adds up.
