Combustion and Civilization

Humanity's entire energy history is a story of combustion. Wood burning powered civilization for millennia. Coal drove the Industrial Revolution. Petroleum fueled the modern economy.

The problem is that combustion of fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas driving climate change. Burning coal, oil, and gas has increased atmospheric CO2 from 280 ppm (pre-industrial) to over 420 ppm today.
